You seem to very much love RL fossils, as well as fossil pokemon, and that's great! But I've never seen you talk about the galarian fossils before.... so I wanted to ask your opinion on these funky guys based on RL paleontology mix-ups!

I do! I wanted to be a paleontologist as a kid, and it definitely shows. (If 5-year-old me had been allowed to make a TV show we'd have had Dinosaur Train a LOT sooner, that's for sure.)

The Galarian fossils, as I imagine most people are aware of by now, are inspired by...well, paleontology in its earlier stages wasn't very good at getting things right. Perhaps the most famous example of this is poor Iguanodon, initially discovered in the UK. When it was discovered in 1825, they didn't have a full skeleton, and the parts they did have led to some questionable speculation. The teeth - Iguanodon was an herbivore - resembled an iguana's teeth, so the newly discovered dinosaur got its name. Based on what parts of the holotype skeleton they had, this was their initial guess:

As we know today, this was objectively not correct. The worst part was that the scientist who found Iguanodon, Gideon Mantell, figured out from later specimens that Iguanodon's forelimbs were more slender than initially believed. Unfortunately, he died before he could contribute to the now-famously bad Crystal Palace dinosaur statues, so for decades this was what the public believed Iguanodon looked like.

Mantell didn't get along with Richard Owen at the end, either - although we owe Owen for coining the word 'dinosaur,' he was a creationist and didn't fancy evolutionary theories at all. Owen was better connected and better funded, and his vision of dinosaurs was what the public got to know until research improved.

Famously, one of those Iguanodon statues hosted a dinner party before it was completed:

Early paleontology in general was a hot mess. In America the Bone Wars, which happened mostly in the 1880s, were an intensely hostile conflict between two paleontologists, Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. It was an absolute shitshow, to say the least. Their reconstructions were sloppy because they were racing to outdo each other - Cope put Elasmosaurus's head on the tip of its tail at one point. People just weren't very good at this yet.

So now we come to Cara Liss, whose name tells you everything you need to know about her. Just like Cope and Marsh, and perhaps Owen before them, she's confident that she knows what she's doing and what she's talking about, and the Dex entries for the Galarian fossils are probably written by her or at least based on her alleged "research." She's no better than a 19th century paleontologist trying to outshine a rival scientist by slapping things found close by each other together to make one creature.

The cool thing is that people who love paleontology can make pretty good guesses about the fossils based on what we can see of them!

Fossilized Fish - most likely Dunkleosteus, based on the skull. This is a Dunkleosteus skull:

Fossilized Dino - not a dinosaur at all, but most likely a Plesiosaur of some sort. The Japanese name is actually "Fossilized Plesiosaur," which makes me wonder if whoever translated this thought Plesiosaurs were dinosaurs - it's a common fallacy. Pterosaurs get the same treatment.

Fossilized Drake - definitely not a dragon. If anything, it appears to be most similar to the Stegosaurid family, but it's inconclusive, because those appear to be spines instead of plates. At any rate, we deserve a real Stego fossil in these games.

Fun fact - the spikes at the end of a Stegosaur's tail are called a "thagomizer," which comes from a Gary Larson comic - because as we know, academics LOVE Gary Larson.

Fossilized Bird - I want to see this one completed correctly the most, because it appears to be a Dromaeosaur - and it almost DEFINITELY correctly has feathers. The Dromaeosaur family includes your raptors:

A lot of familiar names on this family tree.

There's a slimmer possibility that the Fossilized Bird was a Troodontid, one of my favorite groups of dinosaurs because they were likely highly intelligent (which gives them the potential to have all sorts of extra interesting behaviors - the one we see in Prehistoric Planet intentionally spreads a fire like a firehawk), but it's more likely that it was a raptor. Either way, IT HAD FEATHERS AND I AM LIVING FOR IT.

Where we are right now with paleontology is that Dromaeosaurs, Troodontids, and birds are more or less "cousins."

"Avialae," of course, is the group that includes modern birds. There's a reason we use the phrase "non-avian dinosaurs" nowadays - birds are pretty conclusively dinosaurs!

This got long, sorry! I can really get going when paleontology is brought up, apparently. Hope this is what you were thinking, anon!

So I finally nailed down my designs for the black heart characters (except colossus, perry/predator and Madusa I'm still massing with them) along with some head canons! The characters might look a bit weird next to each other, I didn't draw them all on the same canvas. I know I'm suppose to but I was lazy and didn't want to re draw the refs on one canvas. I also appologize for this being so long.

I'm hoping to start a comic with these guys. I always end up saying no to projects like this because I don't think my art is good enough but I think I'm going to put my foot down this time!

Hal:

Can talk(unlike my version of Cyan)

Pretty laid back but knows when he needs to be serious

Will curse you out

Thinks Aura and Nautilus are cute together

His cape works as his "soul meter"(idk what to call it). It has 3 squares on the back that represent Hal's souls. The cape becomes tattered and ripped when souls are taken.

He just wants 5 minutes of peace without someone trying to take his souls, please give him his 5 minutes of peace.

Really hates colossus

In the context of black heart I don't consider him a nano bot. He can bleed and stuff like that.

When he sleeps his body starts to heal any wounds and mend his cloths. This leaves him defenseless as he will remain unconscious until it's finished. He tries not to sleep out in the open and often uses caves and trees as temporary shelters when he needs to sleep. This can also activate when he is knocked unconscious but in cases like with Colossus the healing part is stopped.

He can change colors but he prefers red. His cloths don't change colors with him. Just his skin and his cape.

Again, in he context of black heart, I imagine Hal just kinda woke up somewhere with a bit of knowlage about himself and that's about it. Shortly after works he ran into Aura and Nautilus for the first time. He considered the battle a joke.

Nautilus:

Has glowing markings all over his body. He can cause them to glow at will

Can only breath air for around 10 minutes( this time can decrease with some conditions such as heat or cold. This is because his gills need to be wet for him to breath air, so if it's really hot out his gills will dry out faster)

Has a stutter due to the N.A.T.U thing, among other things. Like trust issues when Xero is around

Is euryhalinr(this just means he can breath any kind of water)

His suit adds about 100lbs to him (material, water, and special boots to help with balance when moving around in the suit)

Likes to make jewlary with shells and stuff

Loves Aura to death. Would litterally die for her.

His teeth work like a shark's. One falls out? You've got plenty more to fill the gap! He has given pretty much all his friends breif heart attacks when he casually spits one out after they hear the loud bone cracking noise of a tooth braking. He keeps all the teeth.

Runs on all fours for some reason. No one knows why, including Aura.

Aura:

Learned all her magic from her parents

Her parents lived like hermits because they believed people still hold witch hunts. Aura hated this because she snuck out a lot and knew that this wasn't the case.

Can be a bit forgetful with spells so she always keeps her book with her at all times

Love Nautilus to death, would die for him too.

Can't swim, her body it denser then water so she just sinks. Nautilus is almost always with her when she's near water for this reason.

Aura's wand is broken but she just keeps fixing it with tape because she doesn't know how to make a new one. She also doesn't want to ask her parents because they wouldn't let her live it down.

Made the headphones Puffer wears so he doesn't have to worry about Siren trying to mind control him, again.

Aura has a secret garden. She uses it to grow her magic plants. It has a defense system that even Jestar can't get past. Only those she has given permission can enter, but those people can give temporary permission to others. Only Nautilus, Puffer and Solario have permission to go into the garden.

Has gotten use to the weird things Natalie can do.

Puffer:

A bit of a hermit, but will open up when he trusts someone

Always has his eyes closed because he thinks his eyes look scary. He can still see for some reason? (Like Brock from pokemon, idk how he could see but he traveled like 3-4 regions like that)

Changes colors depending on emotions. Blue is calm and happy, purple is upset and sad and red is anger and frustration.

Puffer can create lots of spikes all over his body if needed as well as a set of claws. He doesn't do this often.

Likes to cook but keeps it a secret from everyone. (Aura and Nautilus found out though, they just kept the secret)

He really doesn't like Siren after what she did to him, but he will talk to her and hang out with her if someone else he trusts is around.

Really wants to apologize to Hal but he hasn't gotten the chance to yet.

Is really self conscious.

He's not very good at swimming but Nautilus teaches him when Siren isn't around or in Aura's secret garden.

Siren:

Likes to sing for no reason

Has a not so small army of skeleton fish

Is litterally heartless (she doesn't like to talk about it)

Has a crush on Puffer but she doesn't know how to fix the bridge she burned with him

Plays chess with Myst a lot(and wins a lot, much to Myst's dismay)

She can shape shift her tail into a pair of legs. This was a "gift" from Jestar to help her be a better assassin for him

Thinks Xero is a prick

Likes to steal Xero's alcohol sometimes

Can water bend. She can't blood bend though. She's tried.

Likes rock and country music for some reason

Nautilus likes to play with her fish some times.

Knows a bit about necromancy. She doesn't like to talk about it though. She never does it in front of anyone besides her fish army

Myst:

Doesn't like to talk about his life outside work

Is well over 100 years old( he lost count)

Is very protective when it comes to Shade

Doesn't really understand Shade but will support her regardless

Likes to smoke when he thinks no one is around

Can create an umbrella to protect himself if he is caught outside when the sun comes up

Likes to play chess

Is basically a dad to the other assassins

Rarely opens his third eye. This usually only happens when he gets frantic, scared or extreamly angry

Does not have any remorse over killing Parry

He doesn't eat in front of others if it can be helped

Myst told Nautilus about Shade once. He had a bad feeling and asked that if anything happened to him Nautilus would take care of her. Only problem was no one thought about the address of Myst and Shade's mansion. He found her though, don't worry.

When he is exposed to sunlight it will immediately cause him to get sunburned. If he doesn't leave after about 30 seconds- 1 minute he will start to die slowly and painfully. He has taken a lot of tea baths because of the sun

Solario:

A big dork

Very loud and bubbly

Is a prince from a kingdom galaxies away from where black heart takes place in

Was suppose to marry the moon from the moon is getting away level (haven't given her a name yet) but she unknowingly broke Sol's heart so he left. He wanted her to be happy and he clearly couldn't give her that happiness.

Doesn't understand "mortal" things but wants to learn.

Nautilus taught him the word yeet and now he won't stop using it

I headcanon that his voice actor would Gary LeVox(lead singer of Rascal Flatts)(don't ask why, I can't change what has happened in my brain)

Will stop at nothing to see his friends happy

Likes hanging out with Aura, Nautilus and Puffer

Can make himself hotter or colder at will. He tends to stay at a heat that won't hurt others when the go near him, but not cold enough to cause himself harm.

If he gets to cold he can die. He also starts to become extreamly cold or extremely hot before death. The direction his tempature goes in is dependent on what he was doing before hand. (Example: reading a book, gets shot, starts to get colder and colder. Attacking Hal trying to get his soul, shapeshifts so much he almost blows himself up, gets hotter and hotter)

Can be a bit over dramatic sometimes

He is incredibly strong. He can lift both Puffer(who whieghs roughly 230 lbs) and Nautilus when he's in his suit(so about 250 lbs) with no trouble. He forgets about his stranghth some times and has accidentally thrown a few things before quickly trying to fix it.

His shapeshifting isn't limited to just objects, he can shape shift small things about him self like his cloths or his entire body into something like a dinosaur. He doesn't do it often though. Mostly just the cloths thing.

Jestar:

Yells a lot

Thinks everyone is incompetent except Xero, for some reason

Accidentally took Puffer when Siren joined do to a confusion about Sirens powers. He refused to send Puffer home.

Colossus is basically just his pet

Xero is the only one who can get away with yelling at Jestar. No one really knows why but they hold really long arguments about all sorts of stupid stuff

Did I mention he yells a lot? I did? Well I’m saying it again. He yells A LOT.

Can shapeshift in to anything

Does not know how to handle baby Madusa. He doesn't know how to handle people in general, and he thought creating a baby was a good idea.

Xero:

Smokes and drinks a lot

Has a German accent(I can’t un heard it, I’m sorry)

Has a wrapped sense of humor

Calls Natilus “shark boy” after natilus bit him(this is related to what happened before N.A.T.U)

Calls everyone a nicknames besides Jestar.

Makes more robots then he needs and holds robot death battles at night.

Wants to dissect Siran after he found out she’s litterally heartless.

Is drunk 90% of the time but that's when he works best. He doesn't care that he has a problem either

Dressed Madusa up is costumes a lot during the 2 weeks it took him to grow up. He created a scrap book with photos of them too.

Can actually be a really nice dude when he wants to be. He doesn't normally want to be nice

90% of his robots are idiots

He's left handed

Colossus:

Is basically Jestar’s pet

Doesn’t speak a language anyone knows

Is basically a king without a kingdom

Starts out really tiny but gets really big for a short period of time once he has infected someone

Shade:

Has trust issues

Is only like 16 years old

Has normal(ish) ghost powers because she was born a ghost

Drives Myst nuts with her edgy stuff

Likes talking to Perry(she meets him after the Funk Hole level)

Can bounce between having a ghost tail to having normal legs.

Her flower is technically apart of her but she doesn't consider it part of her.

Perry:

Kinda skittish around people who look scary to him(so 90% of the black heart cast)

Has a crush on Shade but won't admit it out loud because he's scared of getting bitten in half by Myst, again.

Around 18 years old

Left home because his mom and brother suck and he wanted to be a ghost hunter like the ones he saw on tv. He got his wish for like 2 hours?

Transforms into Predator during the full moons and special moons. Special moons can have different effects on his transformation and mental state. Like a blood moon causes him to become more blood thirsty but a blue moon causes him to actually retain his normal mental state.

He has a habit of spiraling about everything

Predator:

Can't say anything understandable

Each part of his head has a brain so they agrue sometimes

Around 5X the size of Parry

Acts like a dog sometimes

Would have probably just ate Hal instead of taking the souls.

Madusa:

Can breath underwater and air without issue

Doesn't like the fact that he looks like Nautilus

Hasn't figured out how to swim fast like nautilus yet but won't admit it

Calls Jestar dad

Actually gets along well with Xero

Xero calls him Moccasin

Has markings like Nautilus but they only glow in the dark and they aren't as bright

He's allergic to shell fish

Actually had about a 2 week period where he was a kid. Xero and Jestar just gave him a special serum that caused I'm to grow up faster.

Most of his teeth ended up like Aura's but his canines are significantly sharper then they would be. Xero also found an extra set of teeth under Madusa's adult teeth.

Doesn't like the idea that his whole life rests on a tiny, easy to brake, stone on his head but just rolls with it.

Scared Jestar and Xero a lot during his first few days of life. He not only descovered his allergy to shell fish but almost got himself caught by the others a bunch of times.

All these guys belong to OL666 except Hal, he belongs to vitamin games

It's something that pulls and invites where it shouldn't. Something entrancing and mystifying, it makes you want to come closer and closer until- SNAP! Jaws close on you and you don't make a sound again. That's why Cayden places a hand on his fool best friend's shoulder as they approach the house. "This doesn't...feel right." His grip tightens ever so slightly.

"Of course it doesn't, you've been hiding away with the timeline's Speaker for weeks now. Nothing is going to feel right." Doc replies in turn, feeling nothing amiss. He feels like he's trying to walk on a carousel to get to a piece of it that forever remains ahead and around that bend but hm. He notices not the inconsistencies to his thoughts. It's normal isn't it? "It's merely checking up on her and making sure she's alright."

"It's just Drew," Licifo pipes up, waving one hand dismissively and putting his hands in the pockets of his flight bomber jacket. "She's hardly one to be in any trouble."

"If that were true, why're we bein' asked ta check up on 'er? And fer fuck's sake, Garamond... Ye look like yer listenin' to the echoes again. That's dangerous." "I'm not. I have protection." "No! Stop! You stay out here while we check up on her. We can't risk it." "You worry too much..." "I agree with Cayden, actually. You don't look well. Just stay out here alright?"

Licifo raises a hand to knock on the door as Doc leans against the wall with a huff. "Drew? You home?"

The house was....eerily quiet, usually her Pokemon were running about. But no sounds of them, at least, from what Drew was hearing. She felt rather uneasy about yesterday and how she actually blacked out. It wasn't from that one medicine that she tried, was it?

When she heard a knock at the door, she blinked her blue eyes in confusion. A visitor? Who could that be? She pulled her oven mitts off and set them on the counter before heading towards the door, only to hear voices on the other side. When she opened it....she was surprised.

"Oh! Hey boys!" She said with a smile on her face, happy to see the three coming for a visit. Other than looking rather exhausted and maybe under the weather, she seemed...fine?

"Uhhhh come on in, I didn't know you were visiting. I just finished up some gingerbread if you like some and hot cocoa too." Strange..she seemed fine.

"That's alright- Syphoria asked us to come check up on you since something worrying had happened. I know you get terrible headaches often so I thought it'd be best to have me along." Licifo doesn't notice anything amiss as he steps in, ruffling the young singer's hair playfully.

Cayden too is all smiles and agreement, and his stance is misleadingly relaxed. He is actually quite tense, and he hasn't decided to get out of his armor in weeks aside for cleaning it. A certain sense of clarity that comes with prolonged heavy exposure to what the Speaker truly is. A certain sense of understanding that not everything shows itself on the surface. Looking for anything out of place, listening and watching and dancing to the beat of every motion while also turning it to his own manner of dance. "Jus' worried 'bout ye, lass."

Doc remains outside as he was all but ordered to. Those two usually mean the best for him.

Drew giggled a bit with her hair ruffled and she let the two inside, nodding her head," Yeah, I can imagine. Just, a really bad one this time. I've never blacked out from a headache before. Hm?"

Though when she saw only Cayden and Licifo come inside, her attention was right on Doc, making her look rather confused. Why wasn't he coming inside? Sure, skeleton monsters weren't effected by the cold, but it just seemed rather bizarre. "Aren't you gonna come in Doc? If you want, I can get a pot of coffee going for you."

There was something off in the house. One thing that Drew hadn't really noticed.

Where were the Pokemon?

"......" "For right now, I think it's best he stays outside. He doesn't want to get anyone else ill." "......" Huff.

It's a slow look over the main room that offers fuel to the cold fire in his chest. Cayden finds himself frowning ever so slightly. Where are they? "Do ye know where the Pokemon are? Chii is usually 'ere, aye?"

Licifo suddenly grows concerned. Chii is never away from Drew. They're nigh inseparable especially at home. Where could they be?

"Oh well...Okay.." She wasn't too sure on that but, if they said so.

It was only when they ask about the Pokemon, that she blinks in mild confusion. Wait, where were the Pokemon? "I...I don't know. They were here before I blacked out, I remember that much." She murmured and looked a little frantic, now rushing up the stairs and calling out their names.

The only Pokemon that actually surfaced when called was her Glameow, who looked none the wiser to the events that happened yesterday. Though Drew did peer over the railing from upstairs, looking down towards the two.

"Its okay, I found them! They're just asleep upstairs."

Licifo brightens immediately, also none the wiser. "Ahh, that's about right. It is cold out after all. Why don't we make something together for all of us? Cayden has a physical form for a short time so he can eat and sleep properly."

"Hardy har har." The old Knight chuckles, only to look upstairs. ".... Do ye mind if I check out the rooms? I'm a touch paranoid I'm afraid. Happens when you're a war veteran." A joke perhaps but one that makes the two other idiots snicker in response.

Drew looked so relieved while heading down the stairs, blinking and giggling at the two. My goodness, all three of them were so silly. "Well, I did make some gingerbread, but we can make something else. The oven is still warm. Hm?" Bright, blue eyes peered over at Cayden for a moment, nodding her head," Go ahead. I don't mind."

"It is cold outside and Bella isn't a big fan of the cold, but something warm and delicious could help warm them up." She grinned, hopping back to the kitchen.

"I can try and make honey baked apples. The ones I used to make back in the first couple of years of the diner?" Licifo prattles on as if nothing is wrong, while Cayden heads upstairs with a muttering in Eazaric towards Doc that something is wrong- he'll find out what and stop it.

He hardly makes a sound despite the armor he wears. Just enough to let the Pokemon know he's approaching, while keeping quiet enough to distinguish his own sound from another. It doesn't take long for him to recognize what's amiss, and he immediately draws his blade from its sheath. Readied and patient, used to a fight that never quite ends. "Alright ye bastard, do yerself a favor an' fuck off." Growled not into what is heard but into what rarely is.       {SO THE KNIGHT RETURNS TO THE LIGHT}       {OR IS HE STILL DROWNING, SIMPLY       UNDER GUILT AND NOT ANGER?} He growls. "Ye don' need to toy wit' 'er. She don' have that value yer lookin' fer." He uses a hint of his own magic to coat his blade and spell circle glows rune by rune on the floor around him. "An' jus' so we're clear- ye don' got a choice."        {YOU'RE NOT AS STRONG AS YOU ONCE WERE, MAGE}        {YOU CAN'T BE RID OF ME} "Aye. You're right." His sword is stuck into not the wooden floorboards but into the shadow he's been casting. It alights with ribbons of orange. "But I can steal us some time."        {YOU VILE-!} "See you later!" In a flash of orange, the haunting stops and something else freezes. "That's better."

"Oh! That's a great idea! I know the Pokemon would love those too!" Her favorite treat that he first made for her.

Drew was all ready to go with cooking when, she felt something within her head, making her wince and move her hands to her head. Oh no, not another headache, but it seemed far worse like the other day. She nearly fell over as she grasped onto the door frame to the kitchen and struggled to stand, shaking and whining from it.

"N...not...again..." She whined and squinted her eyes closed, barely able to open them from the sudden surge of pain.

Licifo easily moves to hold her up some. "You should sit down and rest. I'll make us something to eat alright?"

Cayden walks back down and looks noticeably more relaxed. If not happy. "The little ones 're rather silly." Act normal. Nothing is amiss. Just another day, just another haunting. "Need some help cooking?"

"I wouldn't say no." "Well then! Dingy, come on in, take a seat wit' Drew!" "You're both insufferable." Grumbled past the door as he opens it and walks in, shutting it behind him.

"Y..yeah...I probably do.." She didn't argue, not wanting to push and make the headache grow worse. So with a little help, she pulled a chair from the table to sit herself down, looking at the three with a weak chuckle. Silly boys.

Now the Pokemon start coming down the stairs and Chii is immediately at Drew's side, making sure that she was alright. She's thankful to have her Meowstic back at her side, grabbing one of the cups of hot cocoa from earlier and a bottle of medicine. Thank goodness she got a refill of it.

On the label though...there isn't Unovian writing on it..

Doc glances at it for a moment before frowning. That looks familiar...but he's too tired to read it thoroughly. He just grumbles and rubs at his temples. Licifo and Cayden easily get to cooking, their banter being all too enjoyable to listen to. Old friends who perhaps once were as thick as thieves.

Drew was listening their banter and chuckling, taking a bit of the medicine to help with her headache. It might make her drowsy, but it was the best thing she had to help remedy them.

She did want to tell them of her accidental discovery. But how to bring it up?

"Hey um...guys? Have you um..." She paused," Ever thought I seemed....different, from other humans?" Now this was totally an awkward way of asking.

Licifo speaks first. "Yeah but everybody has something different about them! It's called being unique- ow!" Cayden hits his arm. Wrong answer. "Ye mean tha fact that yer part monster? Aye. We already knew. We wouldn' be who we are if we didn'." Doc smirks; she was a rather easy tell among the others who kept it hidden.

"Wait....you guys already knew?"

She stared at them with wide eyes before squinting them a bit. Oh right, headache...and the lights in the kitchen didn't help. Now she felt like an idiot with hyping herself up to ask them. Great.

"...How..long did you guys know? Is it really that obvious?"

"Don't feel so bad," Cayden responds as he rests his arm on Licifo's shoulder. "At our primes, nothing could slip past us. This old flame might miss a thing or two off and on but yanno. He's getting old." "Coming from a deadman?" "A deadman who died in his prime!" He moves to flex dramatically a few times. Doc starts to howl with laughter. "You both are absolute idiots!" "And ye love us jus' like that~"

Nothing amiss. Nothing changed. What haunting? Only a group of friends laughing through a cold winter day.

At first, she seemed unsure of admitting fully of what she learned. But with these three, she felt...normal. Like nothing had changed just because. And it was nice.

Chii merely shook her head at the three while Drew was giggling, feeling a little better thanks to the medicine. She adored these three, no matter what.

"You three are hilarious." She mused, happy to have the three visiting her. It was nice, none the wiser to what happened.
